The Energy Crisis

I think we have always known that the energy we use everyday is not unlimited, but never thought it would actually be a problem. We take it for granted that it will always be here when we need it even though oil, gas, power, and even water has limited availability. Since we have not taken precautions earlier on to deal with our fast depleting resources, the world is gradually heading towards the energy crisis that will be severe.

As oil and gas move faster towards being extinct, they become more and more expensive. Some people think that the energy crisis is just a myth, a way for the government to increase prices without the consumer asking too many questions. If they would pay attention to history, they could see that we have already had three major crisis already. In 1973 there was the oil crisis, 1979 we had an energy crisis, and in 1990 there was the oil price hike. Since the demand is up and the ever increasing shortage, prices have been rapidly increasing for the past five years.

How long do we really have? Will we deplete our resources in the next five, ten, or fifteen years? Studies show what we have already exhausted 50% of the available oil and with our current rate of consumption, the remaining oil reserve will finish in 32 years. Now just imagine if the rate of consumption increased. Since the earth’s population is ever increasing, you know the rate of consumption is bound to go up.

So what are we going to do about it? You might think that one person can’t possibly make a difference, but you are wrong. We need to understand the importance of energy in our lives and stop taking it for granted by cutting back on how much we use. Spreading awareness is one thing we can do as individuals like joining a car pool, spreading the word on how easy it is to save electricity by unplugging appliances when not in use. You can also implement alternative energy solutions and tell others about them as well. Solar energy and wind energy are very cost effective and easy to incorporate into your life and help with the energy crisis.
